Can I bring my own oil and filter?

Yes, you can. The other option is to order them from us – choose whichever suits you better.

You bring your own supplies

You buy the oil and filter

Make sure in advance that

  • the oil viscosity is right for your car
  • the oil has the car manufacturer’s approval
  • the oil filter matches the engine

You order them from us

We choose the right oil and filter

How we choose

  • according to the car manufacturer’s technical requirements and approvals
  • mainly Castrol engine oils
  • if needed, another manufacturer’s oil that meets the requirements

How often should the oil be changed?

Primpex recommendation: at the latest every 15,000–20,000 km or every 12 months – even when the car has an extended LongLife service interval.

The interval depends on

  • the car and engine
  • the manufacturer’s instructions
  • the engine oil used
  • mileage
  • the age of the oil
  • driving and operating conditions

Shorten the interval if

  • the car is driven a lot
  • you mostly drive in the city
  • your trips are short
  • operating conditions are otherwise demanding

In Finland, cold starts, engine pre-heating, short trips and large temperature swings put a strain on the oil. The recommendation is based on our practical experience of servicing, engine faults and engine repairs – it is not the service interval specified by the manufacturer for every car model.

How the oil change works

The traditional way, through the engine sump plug.

01

Book a time

Registration number, mileage and whether you are bringing your own supplies.

02

Draining

The old oil is drained through the sump plug – this removes more of it than suction.

03

Filter and new oil

The oil filter is replaced and the engine is filled with the right oil.

04

Check and reset

The oil level is checked and the service indicator is reset.

05

Findings

We tell you about any clearly visible oil leaks or other visible issues.

An oil change does not replace scheduled servicing

A separate oil change is suitable as extra maintenance between services, especially for high-mileage cars and demanding use. When the manufacturer’s scheduled service is due, we recommend it.

Oil change

  • engine oil change
  • oil filter change
  • concerns the engine’s lubrication system

Scheduled servicing may also include

  • replacing the air filter and cabin filter
  • replacing the fuel filter
  • replacing the spark plugs
  • changing the brake fluid
  • inspecting the brakes, suspension and steering
  • checks of fluids and other parts

Not sure which one suits your car? Give us the registration number and mileage, and we will help you choose. Read more about scheduled servicing →

Frequently asked questions about oil changes

Why do you change the oil through the sump plug and not by suction?

The traditional change through the sump plug is the better method: more old oil is removed from the engine than by sucking it out through the dipstick tube. That is why we do oil changes the traditional way as standard.

If for some reason the oil cannot be changed the traditional way on a car, it can be sucked out through the dipstick tube. This is always agreed separately before the work.

Is the LongLife service interval enough?

Even if the car has the manufacturer’s extended LongLife service interval, we do not usually recommend driving on the same oil for more than 15,000–20,000 km or 12 months. For high-mileage cars and short trips it can make sense to shorten the interval even further.

Is the service indicator reset included in the price?

Yes. On some new Volkswagen Group cars the reset may occasionally require SFD unlocking, which costs 30 € when needed. Most cars do not need it.

What should I check if I bring my own oil?

The oil’s viscosity and manufacturer approval must suit your car, and the oil filter must match the engine. The labour price is the same 42.50 €.

What if you notice a leak?

During the work we tell you about any clearly visible oil leaks or other visible issues.
