Why does brake fluid need changing?

Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture over time and its properties deteriorate.

01

The boiling point drops

Moisture lowers the boiling point of the brake fluid.

02

Braking performance weakens

Brake performance can deteriorate under heavy load.

03

Parts wear faster

Internal parts of the system can corrode and the service life of hydraulic components can be shortened.

Regular brake fluid changes help keep the braking system reliable and in good condition.

How often should brake fluid be changed?

The interval is set by the car manufacturer’s instructions. On many cars it is about 2 years, but the exact interval varies by make, model and service schedule.

Don’t know when the brake fluid was last changed? We can check the available service records or, if needed, assess the condition of the fluid if this is possible on that car.

How the brake fluid change works

The fluid is replaced and the system is bled from the brake calipers.

01

Book a time

Registration number, make and model, and when the fluid was last changed, if known.

02

The right fluid

We use brake fluid that meets the car’s technical requirements.

03

Replacement and bleeding

The old fluid is replaced with new and the system is bled through the bleed screws on the calipers.

04

Check

We check the fluid level and the visible connections for leaks.

05

Recycling

The used brake fluid is taken for proper recycling.

Older cars and the condition of the bleed screws

On older cars the bleed screws on the brake calipers may be heavily rusted or otherwise in poor condition. When opening such a screw, there is a risk that it gets damaged or breaks.

If we notice a clearly increased risk of breakage, we usually contact you before continuing – and we agree together on how to proceed.

Try to open the bleed screw

An attempt is made to open the screw, knowing that it may get damaged or break.

In that case

  • if the screw opens, the fluid is changed completely in the normal way
  • if the screw breaks, the brake caliper has to be repaired or replaced – this work and its price are agreed separately

Leave the screw closed

The work is completed as far as possible.

In that case

  • the fluid in that wheel’s brake circuit cannot be changed completely
  • a complete change may later require repairing or replacing the bleed screw – or replacing the brake caliper if the screw cannot be repaired

Frequently asked questions about brake fluid changes

Is the brake fluid included in the price?

Yes. The price includes the brake fluid and the standard replacement work: passenger car 60 €, hybrid and electric car and small van 80 €.

We use brake fluids from TRW and Brembo. We keep both DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 in stock – in about 95% of cars we use DOT 5.1, which is also suitable for cars for which the manufacturer specifies DOT 4.

Do you change the brake fluid on a Tesla?

Yes, we do a normal preventive brake fluid change when the braking system is intact and no air has got into it.

Complete diagnostic bleeding of a system that has air in it is done with Tesla’s own Tesla Toolbox system, which is not currently available to us. That is why we do not do diagnostic bleeding in situations such as:

  • after replacing the ABS / ESP unit
  • after the braking system has been opened or has leaked
  • after replacing brake pipes or hoses, if air has got deeper into the system
  • after other repairs that require the manufacturer’s diagnostic bleeding procedure
How much does a BMW or MINI brake fluid service interval reset cost?

As a separate job +10 €. If the reset is done together with scheduled servicing or an engine oil change, it is not charged separately.

What if a bleed screw has rusted solid?

If we notice a clearly increased risk of breakage, we usually contact you and agree whether to open the screw knowing the risk or to leave it closed.
