When do brake pipes need replacing?

It is usually the rear brake pipes that rust. Replacement is due when:

  • the pipes are deeply rusted or flaking
  • brake fluid is leaking or the level in the reservoir is dropping
  • the brake pedal feels soft or sinks to the floor
  • the brake warning light is on
  • the brake pipes were remarked on at the inspection

Law and safety

No extra joints

Joint to jointA brake pipe must not be extended with a new joint. We always replace the pipe in one piece – usually from the hose to the first joint or directly to the ABS unit, as for example on a Mercedes-Benz.
Copper pipes in stockWe do not order parts separately – we bend a new pipe along the original route.

Example: the inspection failed only one pipe

The other rear pipe was already in the same condition – which is why we recommend replacing both at once.

  • pipes on the same axle age at the same rate – salt and moisture affect both
  • if only the failed pipe is replaced, the other one often gives way soon after
  • replacing both in one visit: the brakes are bled only once and the job works out cheaper

Frequently asked questions

How much does brake pipe replacement cost?

Replacing both rear brake pipes on a passenger car costs approx. 400 € on average. Replacing the front pipes is usually a little cheaper because the route is shorter. The price includes labour, copper pipes, fittings and bleeding the braking system. We tell you the exact price after an inspection – we have fixed prices for common cases.

Why does the price vary between cars?

The price depends on the car, how long the pipe route is and whether it is a front or rear pipe. On some cars the pipe runs all the way to the ABS unit, which means more work.

Can a rusted brake pipe be extended or patched?

No. New joints must not be added to a brake pipe. If an extended pipe is found at the inspection, the car can be banned from driving. That is why we always replace the pipe in one piece from joint to joint.

Why do brake pipes rust?

In Finland, road salt, moisture and large temperature swings corrode the steel brake pipes under the car. It is usually the rear brake pipes that rust, as they run a long way along the underside of the car.

Why copper pipe?

Copper pipe does not rust like steel pipe, and it can be bent to fit the car on the spot. We keep repair pipe in stock, so no parts need to be ordered.

The inspection failed only one pipe – do both need replacing?

Often the inspection fails only one rear pipe, even though the other is already in poor condition too. In that case we recommend replacing both at once: it is clearly cheaper than replacing the pipes on two separate occasions. That is why we usually offer to replace both rear pipes, and the stated price of approx. 400 € covers both.

Do the brakes need bleeding after the replacement?

Yes. After the brake pipes are replaced, the whole braking system is bled. Bleeding and brake fluid are included in the price.

Can I drive with a leaking brake pipe?

Better not. When brake fluid is leaking, braking power can drop suddenly and the pedal can sink to the floor. If you suspect a leak, bring the car in for inspection or arrange a tow.

Are the brake hoses replaced at the same time?

If the hoses have become brittle or their fittings are rusted, it is worth replacing them at the same time, as the pipes are being removed anyway. Hoses are charged separately.

My car failed the inspection because of the brake pipes – what should I do?

Send us the inspection report or its fault entry and the car’s registration number. We will give you a price estimate and book a time so that you make it to the re-inspection.
