When do brakes need replacing?

Brake pads are replaced when they are worn, damaged or the wear sensor has been triggered. Discs should be replaced if they:

  • are worn below the permitted minimum thickness
  • are heavily rusted
  • have overheated or are damaged
  • have deep grooves, cracks or clear run-out

The whole axle

Left and right at the same time

SafetyBrake pads are always sold as an axle set, and the brakes on the same axle must brake evenly. That is why pads and discs are replaced on both sides.

Frequently asked questions

How much does brake pad and disc replacement cost?

Average prices for a passenger car: front brake pads 85 € (1 h), rear brake pads 102 € (1.2 h), front discs and pads 102 € (1.2 h), rear discs and pads 127.50 € (1.5 h), and discs and pads front and rear 212.50 € (2.5 h). On premium cars and special brakes the price may be different or calculated separately. Parts are charged separately.

Do the discs always have to be replaced with the pads?

Not always. If the discs are in good condition and thick enough, only the pads can be replaced. If the discs are worn or damaged, we recommend replacing discs and pads together on the whole axle.

Can just one side be replaced?

Usually not. Brake pads are sold as an axle set, and the brakes on the same axle must work evenly – otherwise the car may pull to one side when braking. That is why we always replace them on both sides.

The exception is an urgent repair. If, for example, a sticking brake caliper has quickly worn out the pads and disc on one side, only the disc and pads on that side can be replaced.

Can I have the brakes checked without an appointment?

Yes. We assess the external condition of the discs and pads free of charge without lifting the car during opening hours. If lifting or dismantling the car is needed to find out, the inspection is charged separately.

What if a brake disc has overheated?

The cause is found before the replacement – for example a sticking caliper, slide pins, seized pads, the handbrake mechanism or a brake hose. Otherwise the new parts can be damaged quickly.

Can a brake stick after the replacement?

Rarely, but it is possible. When new, thicker pads are fitted, the caliper piston is pushed further back, and a hidden fault in an old caliper can then start to show. If one wheel gets hot, there is a burning smell from the brakes or the car does not roll freely, bring it in for inspection as soon as possible.

Does my car have an electric parking brake – does it matter?

Replacing the rear pads then requires the service mode on a diagnostic tool. This is usually included in the work, but on some cars there may be an extra charge. VW Group cars built from around 2020 (Volkswagen, Audi, Škoda, SEAT, CUPRA) also need SFD unlocking, +30 €.

How are new brakes bedded in?

For the first few drives, avoid long hard braking, repeated heavy braking from high speed and overheating the brakes.

Which brake parts do you use and recommend?

We use and recommend quality brands – primarily TRW, Textar and ATE. We give you the options and prices in the quote.

Cheap brake pads and discs are cheaper only at first glance:

  • they wear faster;
  • they squeal more often because of poor-quality material or design;
  • their shape and dimensions can be inaccurate, so they have to be adjusted during fitting – this takes extra time and means extra costs for the customer.

That is why quality parts usually work out cheaper in the long run.
