When bushings need replacing

A bushing is a rubber-and-metal part that cushions the movement of the control arm. When the rubber tears or comes away from the metal, the arm starts to move.

  • knocking or thumping from the rear over potholes and speed bumps
  • the car feels like it wanders or the rear end moves around in corners
  • tyres wear unevenly and the alignment values do not hold
  • a remark at the inspection: bushing torn or loose
  • BMW: constant creaking from the rear over every bump

Typical cases

On these cars bushings often wear out

Ford and VolvoRear axle bushings on the Fiesta and Focus and front trailing arm bushings on Volvos are well-known faults – we replace them all the time.
Toyota, Kia, Hyundai, PeugeotRear axle beam bushings tear with age and road salt, often at 10–15 years old.

How the replacement is done

The method depends on the car and the type of bushing. We choose the one that is most reliable and affordable for your car.

  • the car is lifted and the control arm or rear axle beam is lowered from its mountings
  • the old bushing is pressed out and the new one in with special tools – usually directly on the car
  • on some cars the control arm is removed completely when pressing on the car is not possible or not worthwhile
  • the mountings are tightened at ride height to the correct torque so the bushing is not pre-stressed

Options

On the car, removed, or the whole part

Pressing on the carThe fastest and most affordable way – used on most rear axle beams and trailing arms.
Control arm removedWhen the bushing is in a tight spot or the bolts are seized. More labour time, agreed in advance.
Whole control arm or knuckleWhen a new part with bushings costs less than the pressing work – or when pressing could damage an aluminium part, as on a Tesla.

BMW: creaking rear axle bushings

On the BMW 1, 2 and 3 Series the floating rear axle bushings (thrust arm bushings) rust and start to creak or squeak. The noise comes from the rear over every bump and speed bump.

  • the fault is typical on the 1, 2 and 3 Series (E8x, E9x, F2x, F3x)
  • the inner sleeve of the floating bushing rusts and rubs against the rubber
  • the bushings are replaced in pairs – the other side is in the same condition
  • a cheap bushing soon starts creaking again, which is why we use Lemförder or Febi parts

Tesla Model 3 and Model Y: rear axle bushings

On the Model 3 and Model Y the rear axle bushings are pressed into an aluminium knuckle. When they wear, play develops in the rear axle.

  • knocking or thumping from the rear on uneven roads
  • play when braking and accelerating
  • sometimes uneven wear of the rear tyres
  • the Model 3 and Model Y share the same rear axle – the fault is common on both

The knuckle is replaced as a whole

Why we don’t pressThe bushing sits in an aluminium knuckle. Pressing puts so much strain on the part that it can crack – and the result is not reliable.
What we doWe replace the rear knuckle as a whole with new bushings and bearings. The replacement is usually done the same day.
PriceLabour approx. 170 € per side, part approx. 280 €.
Alignment mandatoryAfter the replacement, four-wheel alignment 79 € and, if needed, steering angle sensor calibration 20–42.50 €.

Frequently asked questions about bushing replacement

How much does bushing replacement cost?

Replacing a pair of bushings costs 200–316 € on average depending on the design: rear axle beam bushings 200–300 €, front trailing arm bushings 255–316 €, BMW thrust arm bushings 212.50 €. Parts and four-wheel alignment extra. You get the exact price by registration number.

Is a four-wheel alignment needed after the replacement?

We recommend it, but it is not usually essential when replacing rear axle beam bushings or BMW thrust arm bushings. After trailing arm bushings an alignment is worth doing. After a Tesla knuckle replacement the alignment is always mandatory, and the steering angle sensor is calibrated if needed (20–42.50 €).

Can a bushing be replaced without removing the control arm?

In most cases, yes. The control arm or beam is lowered and the bushing is pressed in directly on the car. On some cars the control arm has to be removed completely – we tell you in advance.

Are bushings replaced in pairs?

Yes. Bushings on the same axle have worn at the same rate, and replacing only one often brings the car back soon.

Do you replace other bushings too?

Yes. In addition to rear beam and trailing arm bushings, we replace, for example, subframe bushings, anti-roll bar bushings, differential mounts and other rubber-and-metal suspension parts.

If the bushing is available separately, it can usually be replaced – we tell you the exact price by registration number.

Can I bring my own parts?

Yes, the labour price is the same. We recommend parts from Lemförder, Febi or FAG – cheap bushings do not last long in Finnish conditions.

What if a bolt will not come undone?

A rusted bolt is cut off and a new one is fitted. This adds labour time, and we always agree it with you before continuing.
