Brake caliper replacement and service in Helsinki

We replace and service brake calipers on passenger cars and small vans. Before replacing, we make sure the fault really is in the caliper – and not, for example, in the slide pins, pads or brake hose.

Is the fault in the caliper?

A sticking caliper makes the brake drag and overheat. Typical symptoms:

  • one rim or disc gets hotter than the others
  • the wheel does not turn freely or the brake keeps dragging
  • pads on the same axle wear at different rates
  • the car pulls to one side when braking
  • the disc shows signs of overheating
  • brake fluid is leaking from the caliper

Before the replacement

We check the cause of the fault

It is not always the caliperThe same symptom can be caused by the slide pins, seized pads, the handbrake mechanism or the brake hose. That is why a caliper is not replaced on a guess alone.

Which calipers we fit

Most often new MaxGear calipers: despite the low price, there are very few warranty cases. They are the best-value option among the aftermarket parts available. In our experience they last at least three years in normal use without other faults in the braking system – many of our customers have driven on them for more than four years, including in fairly old cars.

  • the second option, which we also fit often, is new NK calipers
  • we do not usually offer remanufactured exchange calipers: they do not last as long as new ones, and there have been shortcomings in the quality of the remanufacturing
  • want an original or another brand? We order it for you, or you can bring your own caliper
  • we do not fit some other budget brands: in our experience they have too many warranty cases

MaxGear caliper warranty

12 months or 15,000 km

What the warranty coversA fault in the caliper itself, as well as the brake discs and pads if the caliper has damaged them. Whichever comes first.
We find the cause firstIn a warranty inspection we find out why the caliper failed and which parts were replaced during use and why – the supplier also requires this.
When the warranty does not applyIf the caliper was damaged by another fault – for example a seized handbrake cable. The same applies if you declined the repair when we told you about the fault, or if the fault appeared later and the cable was replaced afterwards elsewhere.
After the warranty periodA year is a reasonable minimum lifetime for an affordable caliper: Finnish winters and road salt put heavy strain on brakes. Even after the warranty period we will not leave you alone with the problem – we sort it out together and are flexible, for example by refunding part of the labour. If there was a defect in the part or the work from the start, we are responsible for it under the Consumer Protection Act even after the warranty period.

Frequently asked questions

How much does brake caliper replacement cost?

Replacing one brake caliper on a passenger car costs 85 € on average (1 h). If the caliper is replaced together with brake pads or discs, the extra price is 42.50 € per caliper on average. On premium cars and special brakes the price may be different. Parts are charged separately.

Do brake calipers need replacing in pairs?

Usually not. Unlike brake pads and discs, a caliper does not automatically need replacing on both sides. If the caliper on the other side works normally, only the faulty one is replaced. On an older or high-mileage car, however, we also check the caliper on the other side.

Why does a brake caliper stick?

The most common cause is corrosion. In Finland, road salt, moisture and large temperature swings age the caliper’s rubber boots and seals. When a boot fails, moisture and dirt get into the piston, cylinder and slide pins, and the piston no longer returns normally.

Is servicing the slide pins enough?

Often yes, if the caliper itself and the piston are in good condition. The slide pins are removed, cleaned and greased and the rubber boots are checked – the pins or boots are replaced if needed. The price is based on the labour time.

Is it worth rebuilding an old caliper?

We do not usually recommend an extensive rebuild with a repair kit. The body and cylinder of an old caliper may have corrosion that the kit does not remove, and the labour time easily brings the price up to the level of a new caliper. A rebuild can make sense for a rare caliper or when a new part is not available – these are assessed separately.

What if the caliper has overheated the brakes?

A caliper that has been sticking for a long time can damage the disc, pads, rubber boots and brake fluid. That is why we always also assess the condition of the disc and pads. If they have clearly overheated, we recommend replacing them at the same time.

Does the rear caliper have an electric parking brake?

Many cars do. In that case the parking brake is put into service mode with a diagnostic tool and returned to normal mode after the work, with a basic setting if needed. This is usually included in the price, but depending on the car there may be an extra charge.

What is SFD locking?

On VW Group cars built from around 2020 (Volkswagen, Audi, Škoda, SEAT, CUPRA) the diagnostics are protected with SFD locking. It has to be unlocked, for example, to put the rear electric parking brake into service mode. SFD unlocking +30 €.

Is the brake fluid changed at the same time?

After a caliper replacement the braking system is bled, and the brake fluid needed is included in the price. If the brake fluid is old, we recommend changing all of it at the same time.

Can I bring my own brake caliper?

Yes. We are responsible for the quality of the fitting work, but we cannot give a warranty on the quality or durability of a part you bring yourself. If your own caliper turns out to be faulty, the new removal and fitting work is charged separately.

Does the warranty cover other brake parts?

The warranty covers the work we do and the parts we supply. If a fault appears in a caliper or connection we fitted, we repair it without a labour charge. Later faults in other old brake parts, such as the caliper on the other side or an old brake hose, are separate repairs.
