When should an oil leak be checked?

A little old moisture and an active leak are different things. A check makes sense if:

  • oil spots appear under the car
  • there is fresh oil on the surface of the engine or gearbox
  • you need to top up the oil regularly
  • you can smell burning oil in the car
  • an oil leak was remarked on at the inspection

Source first

Oil runs downwards

Visible oil does not tell the whole storyOil spreads over the surface of the engine and drips from the lowest point. That is why we look for the real starting point of the leak before replacing anything.
Wash and re-inspectionIf the engine is covered in oil, we wash it and inspect it again once the leak is visible again.

Example of our work

Valve cover gasket replacement: the cover removed, the sealing surfaces are cleaned and a new gasket is fitted.

  • we locate the leak point precisely, after washing the engine if needed
  • we remove the cover and clean the sealing surfaces
  • we fit the new gasket and apply sealant where the manufacturer requires it
  • finally, we check that there is no longer a leak

Frequently asked questions

How much does oil leak repair cost?

The repair starts with locating the leak: a basic inspection on the lift 20 € or diagnostics 85 €/h, and an engine wash of approx. 85 € if needed. The repair itself is 85 €/h – for example a valve cover gasket 85–170 € and an oil filter housing gasket from 170 €. Gaskets are inexpensive, usually 10–50 €. We tell you the exact price once the leak point is clear.

Why does the engine sometimes need washing?

Old oil covers the engine so that a fresh leak point cannot be told apart. We wash the engine (approx. 85 €), you drive for a while, and we inspect again – then the leak shows clearly.

Where does oil usually leak from?

The most common points are the valve cover gasket, the oil filter housing gasket, the front and rear crankshaft seals, the oil pan, sensors and the oil pipes and hoses.

Is a small oil leak dangerous?

A little old moisture is not usually urgent. If the oil level drops noticeably, oil drips on the ground or gets onto the hot exhaust manifold, the repair should not be postponed: too little oil can wreck the engine, and oil on a hot surface causes smell, smoke and at worst a fire risk.

There is oil on the timing belt – what now?

The leak is worth fixing soon, because oil makes the timing belt brittle and shortens its life. If the leaking front crankshaft seal is behind the timing end, replacing it requires removing the timing belt or timing chain – the work is practically the same, so the belt or chain is worth renewing at the same time.

Why is the rear crankshaft seal expensive to replace?

It sits between the engine and the gearbox, so the gearbox has to be removed – the work is the same as for a clutch replacement. That is why the seal is usually replaced together with the clutch.

Do leak stop additives help?

They can temporarily slow down a small leak by softening the seals, but they do not fix a broken or hardened seal. A lasting repair means replacing the seal.

Why do seals leak?

Rubber and cork seals harden with time and temperature changes. In Finland, the large temperature differences between cold starts and a hot engine strain the seals. Infrequent oil changes and a clogged crankcase ventilation also increase leaks.

Which seals do you use?

We use quality seals from well-known manufacturers such as Victor Reinz, Elring and Corteco.

The inspection remarked on an oil leak – what should I do?

Send us the entry from the inspection report and the car’s registration number. We locate the leak and tell you the price of the repair before the work.
